My body simply wont match my mind…

Good morning buddies…THANK YOU to all of you who commented on my last blog…

You guys really did help me…

I threw a bit of a pity party for myself Saturday…I sent out fancy invites, but nobody but me showed…I had a great time though…Dancing. Chatting with myself. LOL… :)

By mid day I had done a lot of chores, and then I went and worked out…I stayed on plan all day Saturday which was a good feeling for a weekend, so I ended up okay…

I am still a bit down, but I will be fine…

I think my body is just telling me to slow down a bit…And yes, thats frustrating…

When your mindset is LETS GO….LETS LOSE THIS WEIGHT…It is very disappointing to have your body say NOT SO FAST SISTER…

For those who might not know, I had back surgery 6 weeks ago. And although I am doing overall very well, my body is starting to hurt more and more each morning. And my sleep is now interuppted with some discomfort.

My doctor said to let my body be my guide…

My guide is saying “DUDE. I NEED A REST”

So this is of course stressing me out. How can I lose 20 pounds by Christmas when my body is on hiatus???

Ugh.

Well, after much thought, I have decided to try working out every other day, instead of 4-5 days in a row with a day break in between…

I think this will allow my muscles, my back, to recover a bit in between…I will try this for a few weeks and see if that doesnt help…I refuse to stop working out all together…But I guess I could reduce the intensity of my workouts…

Anyway…The eating is going well…I am logging in my journal everything…Even on my “Free” days…I am staying between 1200 and 1300 calories per day…

And although I am frustrated and extreemly impatient, I am starting to feel better…My body is already starting to look different again…And I am glad…

I am logging in here every day and reading blogs…THIS IS A HUGE MOTIVATOR…I reply when I can…And I am glad to have buddyslim back in my life…Sure did miss this place…

Rock on everyone!!! :)

hey Dawn you know I was thinking I know you are a diet pro so you might have already thought of this but have you tried mixing up your workouts? Maybe go for a hike, bike, swim do some video your body has never tried? That seems to help me move down when I am stuck. I like that you are mixing up your workout days our bodies know us so well

Hey girlie, maybe do more low impact exercise like bike, recumbrant bike, cross trainer on low resistance, aqua aerobics, walking in the pool with arm bands on your ankles (this works brilliantly as a resistance exercise!!!)… there’s loads you can do.. but because you’re only 6 weeks post back surgery, you need to ocus on low impact exercise.

Are you still having physical therapy? If not, then maybe arrange a check up with a therapist. They can give you more exercise advice, help keep you motivated, check your physical therapy home exercise programme and perscribe very good core stability exercises. Your core is soooooooo important after you’ve had back surgery. I mean, you’ve already been through one op… you dont want to go for another one.

There have been a couple of different people on here that were laid up after surgery, and still lost weight. Calorie control is the big factor. Have to really watch what you are eating if you aren’t as able to get moving. Wish I could remember the id’s of the ones that were on here. One had foot/knee surgery (I think). The other had some sort of illness that was causing bones to break. He was avid about getting exercise even though he was in a lot of pain. He got some sort of pedaling thing that he could do with his arms to get exercise. Both people were successful in losing while they had limited ability to move. It is good to see you back, Dawn. Be careful that you don’t cause harm to your body. The last thing you want is to hinder your recovery!

Yeah, those pity parties are a drag. Half the time no one shows up, the other half they just ruin the party by making you feel better. (the last thing you want at a pity party) lol I have degen. disk disease and was doing physical therapy, but after I started doing water aerobics my doctor said I didn’t have to do PT as long as I kept up the water exercise classes. I was in such pain when I started and after a few months the difference was incredible. Now I’ve been doing them for 3 years and haven’t had even a twinge. I hope you don’t suffer too long, I know you must be miserable, especially in the morning. So hard to get out of bed and get going. Good luck, hope you feel better soon. :)

Thanks ladies…I think I will focus more on the walking/hiking thing for now…Lower impact…For my back certainly is feeling it these days…

I would love to swim Sandy, but financially, cant afford a gym right now. I have a gym that comes free with my condo right now… :) So that one is out…

But walking and hiking is free, so I might just have to adjust a bit…Its hard breaking routines…I am rather hard headed!! LOL… :)

I think every other day is a smart idea. And you just can’t find a better all round exercise like walking… Get out and get some fresh air! I bet you start seeing the scales move in the right direction, maybe not as fast as you want, but move nonetheless. HIGH FIVERS for sticking with the journaling!

    Huggggggggggggs,

I agree that the every other day is a great idea and offers balance. You still have to give your body time to heal anyway so later your workouts can be stronger and stronger. Take care girl. Don’t rush things. Remember, you can still make alot of progress with just food alone. Have a good one!

Pity parties suck butt! :P I had a BIG one when my husband went back to Iraq after his two week visit in early July. The day after he left was a Friday and the kids and I set out to have a REAL pity party, it was all in good fun, with the intentions of getting it out of our system so to speak. Went out and bought pizza rolls, soda and ice cream and stayed up all night eating junk food and playing video games. While it was fun, it did get depressing for me on the inside and I ended up spending the next week in a very strong depression.

No more pity parties for us!!! (that means you, too lol) We’ve got to just face our situation head on for what it is and be glad that we have at least that, because it can always be worse. So you’ve got to change your workout to every other day instead of daily? So you may not lose weight quite as fast as you want? You’ll be okay, because you ARE going to be working towards your goals and you WILL be reaching them. And like WW said, you can still make alot of progress with just food alone.

I like that you’re going to be getting in more walking/hiking. That will be good for exercise while not causing more back pain.

It’s ok to have a pity party. I didn’t get an invitation though - next time ok?

I’m sorry your body is not making that mind body connection yet. I do understand your struggle. When I tore my groin muscles, my head and heart wanted to work out so bad but by body was in too much pain. So I was 30 lbs heavier before I was able to get back to my routine.

You’re doing an amazing job for someone who had surgery 6 weeks ago. It may take you a bit longer to lose the weight but you are doing everything right.

  10. betsysblog @ September 23rd, 2008

Hey there no more pity parties! Listen to your body- when it tells you to rest, you do it! My mom had back surgery years ago but still to this day if she strains it or does too much she will end up flat on it for a few days!! So take it easy and allow yourself to heal! And don’t worry-your weight loss will happen. You’ve accomplished so much already, you know you can do it!

My invitation must have gotten lost in the mail…seems like I missed a fun party!! LOL!! Ok, so I e-mailed you this morning without reading this blog….and now I have a better understanding of what is going on. Perhaps, you have answered your own question…or rather, it seems you have the right answer—-if you MUST exercise, which I understand you do, the best is to do so at a lower intensity. Swimming would’ve been good, but I understand the expense. Please let me know what you decide to do!

  12. kamaperry @ September 23rd, 2008

I also think the every other day is good. Rest and recup too! Hugs, Kama
