I HAVE QUESTIONS!!!!
And I need some answers!
Any fellow Fat Gram counters out here? I can not seem to get a definitive answer on how many fat grams I should have…
YEARS ago (over ten) I counted fat grams and lost weight, but if I remember correctly, I stayed under 20 per day. That seems awfully low…
Per the Alli website which also counts fat, it says you should stay UNDER 15 per meal, which would be 45 per day. That seems HIGH…
So I have done some research and I am getting numbers all over the board. I have, for now, decided to stay around 30…But does anyone else know???
Other then that confusion, things are going well. Training myself to look for fat along with calories is challenging, but I have enjoyed getting back in touch with my food labels. I think this change/challenge is exactly what I needed…I have been on plan, and under my 30 grams of fat all week…
Also wanted to ask another question. I think Jennifer eats organic…I am really really thinking of starting to switch my diet over…I am reading a great book right now about how bad our food is for us, and frankly, its scaring me into eating better…More natural. And its actually making me entertain the idea of vegitarianism.
My sister has been a full fledge vegitarian for 20 years…So its something I have entertained repeatedly throughout my life. MAINLY for animal welfare reasons. But now it coincides with the stuff I am educating myself on about our food industry and how many horrible things they do to our food…
So if any buddies out there have any info on a good starting process for switching to all organic, or slowly becoming vegetarian, I would appreciate it…
Also wanted to send a special thanks to LORI who has been a great buddy lately giving me some advice and encouragement. I do appreciate it!!!

I think that sticking to around 30g a day sounds healthy and like a reasonable goal. When I did my nutrition and fitness training years ago I was told that when buying food you should look at the nutritional values on the back of the pack and food that has less that 4g of fat per 100g is considered low fat. Anything above that should not be part of your diet if you wish to lose weight.

I don’t have a definitive answer. Sorry. I try to stay at 20% of total calories consumed per day. For example, if I consume 1200 calories, that would be 240 calories. Convert that to fat grams (9 calories per gram of fat) and you get 26.67 grams. I try to reach a 20/40/40 ratio every day (fats/carbs/proteins). Everyone is different though, but this ratio works for me. Hope I haven’t confused you too much.
Huggggggggs,
Shan
I try to stay under 20 grams per day on a 1400 calorie per day diet, as that is what my dietitian recommends for weight loss. I’m sure it varies depending on what type of “diet” you are following, but staying around 20 grams for 1400 calories means that your fat intake is between 10% and 15% of your total calories. The 45 grams recommended for Alli has always seemed really high to me for weight loss, but of course I am not a medical professional
.
Okay. I knew I would get some percentages in there!! Math is not my friend…Just an FYI. I do try to stay between 1200 and 1300 calories…So now I am thinking maybe I should stick to 25 grams of fat per day???????
Hmmm this is all very interesting.
I don’t watch my fat gms at all. Geez that sounds terrible.
I watch my calories and try to eat healthy, lots of whole grains and fruits and vegies but now I’m thinking I better start reading labels even more closely.
I do love this site so much and all the different ideas shared by everyone.
Good luck Dawn and let us know how it goes

Lori
Don’t really have an answer, but I did hear from a trainer that about 25 to 30g a day is good. Good luck with your efforts!

Lori does rock - doesn’t she?
Now onto fat - I think like you that between 25-30 seems very reasonable. I think you get alloted 65g per day based on a 2000 calorie diet (the food pyramid). Sangelic has a great blog on all this stuff - look her up.
As for organic and animal free, that’s me. I’ve been a vegetarian for about 20 years (animal reasons) and I’ve eaten mainly organic for about 10 years. Start small as with everything. Many people choose to omit the red meats first and keep chicken and fish once or twice a week (i’m doing that for my kid). It seems that fish is the only “healthy” meat I’m missing, the rest not so much. Watch your proteins and start trying recipes with lentils and different beans. The only veggie downside is that it is easy to eat too much cheese and you need to make sure you get your iron and protein. That said, it’s totally do-able and feels good! Nuts are great too.
As for organic, it really depends where you live and what you can get. The winterFarmer’s markets are great to get local produce as well. With that, really, it’s best to get your produce, dairy, and meat organic. While you can buy all the processed food organic, if you’re on a budget or anti=processed foods don’t worry to much about that (you know like organic potato chips or my favorite - years ago i smoked organic cigarettes LOL).
There is also some idea that there are certain foods, like dairy, that you really should eat organic: i think it’s strawberries, dairy, bananas, oh i can’t remember, but b/c of spray levels. Whole wheat is best organic, too.
So much info - sorry!
Good luck!
I did the 20g and 1200 or less for cals..
I hope that is helpful
hey, what’s the name of that book you are reading??

OMG what have you done with my friend Dawn? For Heaven’s sakes, bring her back to cannibalism…wait…I mean carnivorism! Hehehe, is that even a word?? Anyhow…I’m not sure which Jennifer you’re talking about…if it’s Jennifer from Canada, she eats whole foods…the simplest way to do that is to stay on the perimeters of the supermarket…nothing from the isles….or so I’ve been told…I’m not there with you yet…you’re way ahead of me….but…sounds like counting fat grams is just what the Dr. ordered for you to get your umph back….that, my dearest Dawnie, makes me happy for you!
